Draft Ledger · Embodied Contradiction

Service vs. Policy

Documented military-service records paired with documented advocacy for mandatory service or conscription expansion. The contradiction here isn't policy-vs-vote — it's policy-vs-body: what they would impose on others vs. what they themselves personally bore. Every row is sourced from government documents, court filings, books, or primary-source press archives.

A deferment is not a moral failing. A combat veteran calling for the draft is not the contradiction this ledger surfaces. The contradiction is the cross-product: policy advocacy × personal absence of service. Conscientious-objection deferments, where present, are categorised separately and not subjected to the chickenhawk frame.

Five deferments (four educational, one medical 1-Y in 1968 reclassified to permanent 4-F) avoided Vietnam-era service. The 1968 "bone spurs" diagnosis was, per a December 2018 New York Times investigation, given as a favor to Fred Trump by Queens podiatrist Larry Braunstein. Braunstein's daughters Elysa Braunstein and Sharon Kessel went on the record stating their father issued the diagnosis without examination as a quid pro quo for Fred Trump's ownership of the building containing his medical office.

expand selective service SIGNS TO EXPAND 15 Apr 2026 NDAA signing

Signed the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act, which includes a provision authorising the Selective Service System to use existing federal databases (IRS, SSA, DHS, state DMV) to automatically register all male U.S. citizens and residents aged 18-25 in the Selective Service database, eliminating the requirement of voluntary registration. The provision creates the bureaucratic infrastructure for instant draft initiation if Congress activates conscription. The Selective Service System framework itself remains dormant pending congressional activation, but the database mechanism is now automatic.

mandatory national service SUPPORTS IN PRINCIPLE 22 Apr 2025 corporate manifesto

Palantir's "Reindustrialising America" 22-point corporate manifesto (April 2025) reiterates the conscription thesis at point 14: "The volunteer model has produced a military increasingly distant from the public it defends; restoring a mandatory service requirement — broadly construed — is a precondition for democratic accountability over the use of force."

mandatory national service CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE 18 Feb 2025 book

In The Technological Republic (Crown Currency, co-authored with Nicholas Zamiska, published February 2025), Karp argues that the United States must reconsider its reliance on an all-volunteer military. "A society can only fight the next war if everyone shares in the risk and the cost," he writes, calling for a form of universal national service that could include but is not limited to military service. The book pairs the conscription argument with an explicit call for tech-defense companies (chiefly Palantir) to be more deeply embedded in DoD and intelligence-community decision-making.

Co-founder of Palantir (chairman until 2014, continuing major shareholder) and Founders Fund lead investor in Anduril Industries. Has publicly endorsed Karp's Technological Republic thesis without publishing a personal stand-alone conscription advocacy. Stake in the policy outcome is documented through corporate disclosures: Palantir 2024 10-K lists $1.36B in US government revenue (60.9% of total); Anduril's $20B Army contract (2026) directly benefits from any expansion of force structure that mandatory service would enable.

mandatory national service SUPPORTS IN PRINCIPLE 26 Sept 2023 Government Gangsters (book)

In 'Government Gangsters: The Deep State, the Truth, and the Battle for Our Republic' (Post Hill Press, 2023), Patel argues for re-instituting a form of mandatory civic/military service tied to citizenship benefits, framing it as a remedy for 'civic decay' and a check on the 'Deep State.' mandatory national service SUPPORTS IN PRINCIPLE 16 Oct 2023 Techno-Optimist Manifesto + podcast appearances

In 'The Techno-Optimist Manifesto' (October 2023), Andreessen argued that the United States needs 'a new commercial-civic compact' rebuilding national industrial and defense capacity. Subsequently in interviews on the All-In Podcast (Nov 2023) and Lex Fridman (June 2024) extended this to advocating mandatory two-year national service for all 18-21 year olds — military or civilian infrastructure work — as the substrate for a 'new American age.' No military service in his own record (b. 1971, attended Wisconsin & UIUC throughout draft-age years; never enlisted).

mandatory national service CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE 15 Aug 2024 War Room broadcast episodes

On the War Room broadcast (Aug 15, 2024 episode, also Apr 2024 episodes) Bannon repeatedly called for mandatory two-year national service for all 18-year-old American citizens as a 'spiritual reconstruction' of the country, framing it as a corrective to elite-class shirking. Bannon served in the U.S. Navy 1976-1983 as a surface-warfare officer (Pacific Fleet, no combat deployments) — making his position a Veteran-Advocate stance rather than a chickenhawk one, but the absolutism of the demand (mandatory, no opt-out, all citizens) is on the most-coercive end of the spectrum.

McConnell enlisted in the Army Reserve in August 1967 at Fort Knox while Vietnam-era draft was active. After approximately five weeks of basic training he was discharged for medical reasons (optic neuritis). His own 2016 autobiography 'The Long Game' confirms the short tenure. Question of whether the discharge was facilitated by his father's political connections has been raised periodically but never substantiated to the standard of documented_evasion; recorded here as served_no_combat per the public record.

As Majority Leader 2015-2021 and 2023-2025, scheduled and shepherded every annual NDAA for floor passage, each one expanding force authorities and budgets. Has consistently opposed AUMF sunset amendments and any constraint on executive war powers.
