$185.0M
Wells Fargo fined $185M for opening 2M+ unauthorized customer accounts
CFPB, OCC, and LA City Attorney announced $185M in combined penalties ($100M to CFPB — its largest at that time, $35M to OCC, $50M to LA) over Wells Fargo's widespread practice of opening unauthorized deposit and credit-card accounts in customers' names to meet aggressive cross-sell sales quotas. Internal review eventually identified 3.5M potentially unauthorized accounts opened 2009-2016. This was the precursor enforcement to the 2018 $1B and 2022 $3.7B CFPB actions; together they represent the largest sustained consumer-banking enforcement record in US history.
