Calculated rationale — what each side expected to gain

Both parties pre-assessed the cost. Musk's expected upside is not monetary recovery from OpenAI — OpenAI has no balance sheet to recover against — it is forcing OpenAI into a position where it must seek a federal bailout to survive the suit. OpenAI has publicly indicated it would seek government bailout under sufficient pressure. The functional effect of a successful judgment is therefore taxpayer-funded relief routed through OpenAI to Musk, while simultaneously impairing xAI's most direct competitor. xAI (in which Musk holds the dominant equity position) is the equity-coupled beneficiary on either outcome: win the suit and the competitor is recapitalised on public money under hostile terms; lose the suit and OpenAI has still spent management attention, capital, and narrative defending it.
