Mr. Speaker, I wish I had the magic ability to find the powerful words to try to explain the difficulty of the finances, the reality of the math, and the threat to the Republic, but we are going to try again. How do I get my fellow Members, the public, the administration, and the [[Page H5419]] people around me …

Mr. Speaker, let's try something I have never done before, but I also need to sort of lock something down. Mr. Speaker, if there is anyone from your staff watching--and we said we would make it public-- [[Page H5170]] my team and myself were made a promise today that when we get back we are going to sit down with …

We did what to shore up the trust funds? We did what to basically incentivize our brothers and sisters to stay in the labor force if they wanted to? We had dozens of things--I have been here 16 years, and I have spent most of that time trying to get this place to actually deal with the reality of let's save Social…
  • Excellent. I am probably going to use every one of them. No, I will try to go as fast as I can here. The U.S. population age 65 and up, and I go back to 2011: 41 million. This year, I have 63 million. Okay. Wonderful. I am one of these. I am basically 64. Now, understand, my wife and I are both 64, and I have a 4…

Mr. Speaker, and to the room, I apologize. I was doing a tour for a former firefighter, who actually was paralyzed in the scope of his duties, but we were close. Mr. Speaker, I am going to take 1 or 2 seconds here to try to straighten this out just a little bit. The presentation tonight is going to be a little bi…

Mr. Speaker, this is going to be another presentation of basically budget, debt, my frustration with this place, and my frustration with telling the truth. Mr. Speaker, this is sort of our weekly attempt to see if we can use math to annoy people, so let's actually have some fun here. I am going to try three different things in this presentation. One, we are going to actually talk about the real driver of interest rates, housing affordability. The second thing we are…

What Schweikert trades

No STOCK Act transaction reports on file for this member (House filings only so far).

How this is assembled

  • Roll calls come from the Senate's LIS XML (senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes) and the House Clerk's EVS XML (clerk.house.gov/evs), fetched nightly and never edited.
  • The party line on a roll call is the majority among that party's yea and nay votes. Party unity is the share of this member's yea/nay votes that matched it; a break is a vote that did not. Votes of “present” and absences count toward attendance only.
  • Members are identified by Biographical Directory (bioguide) id; senators' LIS ids are mapped through the unitedstates/congress-legislators roster.
  • Floor speeches come from the Congressional Record (govinfo), split at the speaker lines the Record prints and matched to the member by surname, chamber and state; a passage that names a measure the member later voted on is paired with that vote. Trades are the member's own STOCK Act periodic transaction reports — House filings parsed from the Clerk's PDFs, Senate filings from the Senate's electronic disclosure system. A trade is flagged when its company's sector is one a committee the member sits on oversees, when the member cast a yea or nay on a measure in that sector within thirty days of the trade, or when PACs in that sector gave the member $10,000 or more in a cycle. Sectors for companies come from the SEC's company list and SIC codes; measures' policy areas from the Library of Congress via govinfo.
  • Funding is the member's principal campaign committee as filed with the FEC: receipt totals from the committee's summary, every contribution from another political committee (Form 3, line 11C), and the FEC's own roll-up of individual money by employer. Sectors are assigned by a fixed, published list of name patterns, and the rule that fired is stored with each row.

A break with the party is a fact of the record, not a verdict. Procedural votes, amendments and motions to recommit are all in here; what a given break means is a question for the measure it was on, which is one click away.
