Musk promised xAI's AGI would deliver "an age of abundance" — months later SELC documented xAI running ~420MW of unpermitted gas turbines in a majority-Black Memphis neighborhood
"We're going to have for the first time something smarter than the smartest human. Solve AGI by next year. It will solve all the problems — energy production, water production, food production. We're going to have an age of abundance."
Investigation by the Southern Environmental Law Center documented that xAI installed and operated as many as 35 portable methane gas turbines at the South Memphis Colossus data center without applying for Clean Air Act permits. Combined nameplate output of the documented turbines exceeds 420 megawatts. The site is located in a majority-Black neighborhood already overburdened by industrial air pollution. — Southern Environmental Law Center — xAI turbines add pollution to already-burdened Memphis neighborhood, September 2024. source ↗
Musk's May 2024 framing positioned xAI's compute scale-up as the path to AGI and an age of abundance "that solves food, water, and energy." By September the same year, the Southern Environmental Law Center's investigation documented the material form that scale-up was taking on the ground: portable methane gas turbines totalling ~420 MW of nameplate capacity, installed and operating at the South Memphis Colossus site without Clean Air Act permits, in a majority-Black neighborhood that EPA data already rates as among the most pollution-burdened in Tennessee. At a typical 40% capacity factor those turbines emit on the order of 1.0–1.5 million tonnes CO2e per year — at the platform's declared baseline of 16 tonnes CO2e per US suburban household per year, equivalent to the household carbon of ~62,500 to ~93,750 US suburban households. The local NOx and PM2.5 burden falls entirely on the community next door; the "abundance" outcome promised in the announcement is delivered to a different population.
Baseline: 2024 US suburban household consumption: 10,500 kWh electricity / 109,500 gal water / 16 tonnes CO2e per year. · Methodology · How this is verified
